Writing my own poetry after analyzing some of the greatest poetry ever written was a really great experience. Writing poetry is a lot easier than analyzing it. Writing just comes naturally while analyzing it requires some knowledge of the conventions of poetry. The main similarity between both writing and analyzing was focusing on the author. When I wrote I had to dive deep into myself. I was focusing solely on myself which I had not done in a long time. Creating poetry was turning raw emotions into something meaningful. Analyzing poetry was much the same. It was deconstructing what the author meant with their poems and using evidence to support my claim. Writing about poetry greatly helped with crafting my own poem. Prior to this I was completely unaware of what made a poem “good”. My diving deep into Robert Frost’s, “The Road Not Taken” I understood what made poetry powerful. Poetry is best when it explores deep personal experiences that can reach an audience. While my poem was very absurd, the concept of wishing you could do something different with a relationship is a common experience. After participating in this assignment I learned many things that I could apply to my future teaching career. One of the main things is creating a positive environment. When presenting I felt confident and supported by the class. I would definitely attempt to cultivate a classroom environment like this. Another thing that stood out was how understanding why something is so loved can help you create it. I was unaware what made poetry special and after doing research I found creating the poem was easy.
Hi Aidan, I enjoyed reading your post about poetry. I think you made some valuable comments that I did not think to look at it in that light. First of all, I think it is amazing that you find writing poetry easier than writing about poetry. I personally have a difficult time writing poetry because it requires me to deep dive into who I am and what I am going through in that moment I sit down to write about. Also, I agree with you when you mentioned “…unaware of what made a poem “good.” I mainly agreed with this statement because I also was not aware of what made a poem good and amazing. The fact that you even went as far to do your own research about it shows me that you were dedicated to finding out. Lastly, I truly enjoyed listening to your poem at the poetry slam. It made me actually laugh out loud and showed me that it truly is an amazing outlet to let our thoughts run wild. I love how you want to cultivate a positive environment for your future students so that they are not afraid to express themselves the way we were able to. Great post!
